Sounds first, then words, then signs

Many toddlers copy a sound before they say a word, so the book starts there. Your child copies 8 fun sounds: uh-oh, moo, vroom, beep, whee, pop, shh and woof. Then come 10 first words from a toddler's day: hi, up, more, go, ball, milk, no, all done, bye-bye and what your child calls you.

Four pages show a simple baby sign with a how-to: more, all done, help and eat. A sound, a sign, a point or a look all count as a turn.

Talk Time: a tip for you on every page

Flashcards can turn into a quiz. We'd rather they turn into a conversation. Every page has a Talk Time tip for the grown-up, built on what speech therapists teach parents: point and name it, pause and wait, say it again, and cheer every try.

  • Point to one picture and say one clear word.
  • Wait a few seconds so your child can take a turn.
  • Say the word again in a new way: “Ball. Big ball. Roll the ball!”
  • Cheer every sound, sign or point, not just words.

Early talkers, late talkers, bilingual families and children who use signs or AAC all use the same book. A book. Each page works like a big flashcard: one clear word, letter, animal or number, with your child in the picture.
